Introduction and Background of the School
In April 1931, who was the director of North Colombo College Mr. Jameson planted a sapling and started Hunupitiya Mixed School with 65 students. The current Hunupitiya Bandaranayake Maha Vidyalaya had only one building. Later, the handicraft building which was built with the help of the local residents, then Kelaniya MP and then the first executive president of the country, J. R. It was opened by Mr. Jayawardena in the year 1953, where he also arranged to provide a teacher's house to the school. Currently, the largest playground in Kelaniya, owned by the school, was built in 1964 by the then Minister of Education, P. B. G. It was opened by Mr. Kalugal and he promoted our college as a great college. At present, there are nearly 400 students in our college, where classes are held from grade 6 to grade 13 with advanced arts and commerce streams.
It is a unique fact that the student Wewelduwe Dharmasena, who was in the founding student group, later became a professor in the Faculty of Science of Peradeniya University. Our college, which has produced scientists in various fields since then, is a breeding ground for multi-national and multi-religious students.
Mrs. VKPS Siriwardena works as the acting principal. The academic staff consists of 25 teachers with skills in various fields. The school meets the current learning expectations of 356 students from grades 6-11 Each grade has 02 parallel classes and GCE (A/L) grade with Arts and Commerce sections.
The fact that the school has to constantly face the adverse economic and social conditions and its negative effects is the biggest challenge that the school has faced. Regardless of the challenges, our school is special to achieve the educational needs of the students and to fulfill their welfare needs.
